Intent
At St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, our PSHE and RHE curriculum is rooted in our Catholic faith and the belief that every child is uniquely created and loved by God. Through a carefully planned programme of learning, we aim to develop confident, caring and responsible individuals who are equipped to thrive both now and in the future.
We intend for all pupils to:
- Develop a strong understanding of their own worth, dignity and identity.
- Build positive, healthy and respectful relationships.
- Understand how to keep themselves physically, emotionally and mentally healthy.
- Develop resilience, independence and confidence in making informed decisions.
- Appreciate and celebrate diversity whilst showing respect and compassion for others.
- Become active, responsible citizens who contribute positively to their school, parish and wider community.
- Live out Gospel values and understand how their faith can guide their choices and relationships.
Through our PSHE and RHE curriculum, we support children to "live life to the full" and flourish academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually.
Implementation
PSHE and RHE are delivered through a progressive and inclusive curriculum, with RHE taught through the Ten:Ten Life to the Full programme. This programme is structured around the themes of Created and Loved by God, Created to Love Others and Created to Live in Community, ensuring learning is rooted in Catholic teaching while meeting statutory requirements.
Children build their knowledge and skills progressively from EYFS to Year 6 through:
- Dedicated PSHE and RHE lessons.
- High-quality discussion and reflection opportunities.
- Exploration of emotional wellbeing, mental health and personal safety.
- Learning about healthy lifestyles, relationships and responsible choices.
- Opportunities to develop their understanding of British Values and citizenship.
- Links with Religious Education, Prayer and Liturgy, safeguarding and the wider curriculum.
- Participation in school events, charitable work and community projects that promote social responsibility and service.
Our curriculum creates a safe and supportive environment where children feel valued, listened to and confident to express their views respectfully.
Impact
The impact of our PSHE and RHE curriculum is seen in the positive attitudes, behaviour and relationships demonstrated by our pupils.
Children leave St Joseph's:
- Confident in their own identity and self-worth.
- Able to build and maintain healthy, respectful relationships.
- Equipped with strategies to support their physical, emotional and mental wellbeing.
- Resilient when facing challenges and able to seek support when needed.
- Respectful of others and appreciative of diversity within modern Britain.
- Responsible citizens who understand their role in making a positive contribution to society.
- Prepared for the next stage of their education and life beyond primary school.
Pupils demonstrate the school values in their daily interactions and show increasing maturity, empathy and independence as they progress through the school. As a result, they are well prepared to become compassionate, respectful and successful members of their communities, living out the Gospel values that underpin life at St Joseph's
